Ready to take your musical theatre work to the next level? This 3-week, 6-session course is designed for performers who already have some acting experience and are ready to go deeper — into character, into connection, and into the audition room with confidence and joy.

Drawing on proven acting techniques and a unique framework of Authentic Performance Skills: Finding Vulnerability on Stage piloted during the rehearsal process of Godspell at inD Theatre, and informed by Casting Director Nike Imoru’s online "The Actor’s Way" course, this class creates a safe and supportive container for performers to play, discover, and grow. Expect real tools, honest feedback, and a whole lot of fun.

What You’ll Work On

  • Character Development: Build rich, motivated characters and learn to connect your emotional life to both text and song, focused on the importance of vulnerability.

  • Acting Through Song: Discover how the same acting techniques that make a scene live also make a song soar.

  • Scene Study: Partner with fellow actors in musical theatre scenes, developing physical and vocal dynamics and the art of true collaboration.

  • Audition Skills: Put together a polished audition package — and, just as importantly, learn to reframe the audition experience itself. An audition is a performance, valuable in its own right regardless of whether you get the callback.

  • Callbacks: Know how to prepare and how to walk in ready to play, not to “win.”

  • Authentic Connection: Through TTC-inspired exercises woven throughout every session, you’ll sharpen the listening and presence skills that separate good actors from great ones.

How the Course Is Structured

Each 2-hour session builds on the last:

  • Session 1: Building the Foundation — students come to the first class having already prepared an audition song and monologue, which they present to the class. We also cover acting fundamentals, rehearsal etiquette, and establish our group agreements.

  • Session 2: Character Development — backstory, motivation, lyrical connection, vulnerability, and deep listening.

  • Session 3: Integrating Acting and Singing — bringing your full acting self to every song.

  • Session 4: Audition Technique — mock auditions, the importance of slating, mindset reframing, building your audition toolkit, and callback preparation.

  • Session 5: Scene Study — partnered work, blocking, physicality, and the give-and-take of collaboration, in a mock callback format focused on the importance of strong choices and flexibility required of a callback audition.

  • Session 6: Final Showcase — share your work, celebrate your growth, and leave with a clear vision of your next steps.

Who This Class Is For

Intermediate-level performers who have prior acting experience and are looking to refine their craft, deepen their audition skills, and learn to show up fully — in rehearsal, on stage, and in the audition room.

What to Expect

A warm, collaborative, and creatively rigorous environment. You’ll receive honest, kind feedback from both instructors and peers. You’ll be challenged — and supported — to take real creative risks by embracing vulnerability. And you’ll walk away with a polished audition package, stronger performance instincts, and a new perspective on auditioning as a practice rather than a test.

Class sessions are on Mondays and Thursdays from July 13th through July 30th, from 6:30-8:30pm at the Ovation! studio at 600 Ericksen Ave NE, Suite 103. Tuition is $250, and financial assistance is available: please email info@ovationmtb.com to inquire.
